Lost in Translation

The “Diversity Day” episode of the Office emphasize multicultural training and Michael who is played by comedian Steve Carrel instructed his staff to participate in the exercise “Name that Stereotype”.  The intent of the exercise was to enhance his staff’s cultural competencies.  Although the episode was extremely funny, in reality, I’ve often found myself in situations similar to that portrayed.  The multicultural training session was intended to enhance cultural awareness and was geared towards “stomping out stereotypes”, by playing upon the many historical views WE have of our melting pot society.  Following that vein of thought, multicultural training is the cure for our organizational ailments.  Coupling that with the prevailing notion that after completion of the training, employees will automatically become more aware of the impact of their actions and when appropriate, make positive changes to their behavior, or it represents a magic wand and when waved, “WALA”… employees are deemed culturally competent.   The  desired outcomes employee satisfaction, increased productivity, or if deemed one of the more “privileged” minority groups, the pleasure of representing your cultural group and educating the masses…..nothing couldn’t be further from the truth…

I can imagine the pressure Kelly, the young women featured towards the end of the episode, must have felt when faced with the expectation that she would represent her cultural group during the multicultural awareness/training session.  The fact that departments recognize the value of developing cultural awareness, knowledge and skills is commendable.  However, the answer to developing cultural competency in the work place is not as simple as applying band-aide solutions or canned programs that play upon hurtful and demeaning stereotypes.  The way conflict is perceived and addressed in the workplace often times is reflective of the individual’s culturally based attitudes and beliefs.  Multicultural training is only one approach to resolving the types of issues that arise in diverse organizations.  Training can positively affect an organization’s awareness of those who are different in their climate and increase knowledge of how different cultures interact in the group is also very useful in identifying and developing the skills needed to perform duties/tasks required of a position.  Although culture is the biggest indicator of how individuals will handle conflict in the work place, recent studies suggest that focusing on an experiential learning approach of building cultural competences and increasing awareness and knowledge of differing cultural groups is critical to the development of the skill sets needed for our global society.

The Office “Diversity Day” episode highlighted the multicultural training minefield that all organizations must maneuver.  I’m a firm believer that discrimination and any type of “ism” should be called out and addressed head on.  This course on Leadership however has brought home to me that how you handle the situation is equally as important.  While the manager, Michael, in the Office episode may have had good intentions, the desired outcome was not achievable with the training model used and the skills sets and cultural competencies obtained would be short lived.

It is my desire to have a positive impact on the climate of any organization to which I’m affiliated and assist in the development of our future leaders.  I intend to continue to develop and refine my cultural competency and use my influence to foster an environment that is inclusive and appreciative of the multitudes of differences that comprise our world.

I Am Women…Hear Me ROAR

I stand alone....

“We know that you’re good at your position, but you may want to tone it down a bit. You’re being perceived as bossy, aggressive and personally, folks just don’t like you”. This is a statement that was made to me a few years back as I entered my first professional position in the field of education. Apparently, some of the seasoned male counterparts were not thrilled with having a young black female leading the initiatives of the department. Granted I applied, interviewed and (rightfully so) was offered the position due in part to my qualifications; but still I was not considered worthy in the male dominated culture. Since there were no valid grounds for complaints, a few were determined to make my work life as difficult as possible with the hope that I would resign. Sadly for them, I had no intentions of leaving, and as a matter of fact, was just embarking on my journey.

Booysen and Nkomo’s (2010) theory suggests that an individual’s gender affects their social location and as a direct result their outlook on leadership. This couldn’t be a more accurate statement; for since my identity is rooted in the traditional female gender, I wouldn’t have a male outlook on leadership. This is problematic in cultures that foster a more traditional or “great man” leadership style, especially if it encompasses more male associated characteristics (i.e. aggressive, decisive, etc.). Since I consider myself a transformational leader, my method of leading could also cause tension between genders in the workplace; for females would consider me a change agent, while men feel outcaste due to my gender association.

You must stand out from the rest!

I’ve often wondered how I would be perceived if I were a male. Would the same qualities i.e., determination, commitment, assertiveness, good organizational skills, and ability to complete the task at hand be considered as aggressive? It’s unfortunate that “gender” was the underlining attribute seen by my male employees, instead of the leadership qualities that I brought to the table. While gender my play a role in the development of leadership styles, it does not prevent women from being capable leaders. I believe that our identified “sex role” spills over into how we interact, behave, and lead. However, one would think that leadership qualities were just that…qualities (whether male or female) of those who effectively and successfully lead others. Anecdotaly, men occupy the majority of leadership positions in this country; but, the tide is turning as the number of women leaders in prominent positions continue to rise.

Despite being judged and/or viewed through gender lenses, my determination to prove that I am not merely an example of Affirmative Action, but a woman who can successfully lead an organization. Although the transformational journey set before me is not an easy one, I will shatter the “glass ceiling” and achieve my destiny.

Product Review: Silky Elements

Hey SC Readers….did you miss me….I missed you all!

Today we have a submission from SC reader “Dr. Brown”, who tried and reviewed Silky Elements hair care line.  Lets see what she had to say about it…

Luxury Moisterizing Shampoo

The shampoo has a lovely smell to it. It also has silk protein, aloe Vera, panthenol pro vitamin B5, and moisturizers as ingredients.

My suggestion for use: Only apply a small amount…for a little goes a long way.  After using this, my hair was squeaky clean and tangle free.

Silky Elements Conditioner

The conditioner is not a leave in and should only be left in for 3-5 minutes max.  This product caused my curls to pop instantly!  My hair is 3c/4a mix but mostly 4a.  It didn’t weigh my hair down either.

FABO finished product

After cleansing and conditioning, I decided to twist one side of my head and braid the other side.  Once air dried, I took both sides down.  My hair was baby soft, had body, shiny, and moisturized.  It looks healthier too. I love it!

So weigh in family….what you think?  Honestly, I would have never thought to try this product….but I may have to consider using this line in the future.   I absolutely love it when you can find a “go to product” at the neighborhood hair store around the corner….that is not expensive!

QOTW: What’s on Your Playlist?

This week’s question comes from SC reader “LoveKarmen” about workout tips and preparations for success:

Hey orAKAle,

I am trying to incorporate more physical fitness into my regular weekly regimen.  I’ve already set up a schedule to follow weekly to stay active and get my heart pumping.  I must admit changing the way I viewed exercise AND making the effort to implement it into my schedule was difficult, but I know I am doing what is best for my overall health; and I want to thank YOU and this blog for keeping me encouraged and motivated to get healthier.

My question is, what do you listen too when you work out?  You seem to be very empowered, excited and self motivated when you tweet about your exercise for the day, or if you have just left the gym, etc.  So what are you listening to that keeps you going to complete your workouts?

First and foremost, congrats to making a life changing decision on your health.  I commend you, wish you well and am honored that The Silky Chronicles was able to assist in some of your health progress.

As for what I listen too….first, I must warn you all that I am somewhat of a music schizophrenic!  Lol.  The diversity in my music, especially for my work outs, is CRAZY! Why….for I like to always keep myself guessing on what is coming next (to set my pace, energy level, etc.).  I have numerous playlist that are specifically designed for my workouts.  A few of them are listed below

  • Marathon Running”: when I was “training”, but now just used for outside power walking and jogging
  • 2010 Jamz: which is a collection of the new popular songs (what our youth may be listening too…lol)
  • So You Think You Can Dance (SYTUCD)”: a dedication to my favorite reality dance show AND a great playlist that gets me amped and keeps the heart pumping…never know what is on this list
  • Encouragement: which is a compilation of Christian/spiritual music that keeps me going, but inspires at the same time? I  also use this play list when I have to force myself to work out/be active (I know you all have those days too….lol)

As for artist/songs selection, below are a few that is always in rotation:

  • La Route (newer artist to me, but her music is somewhat techno…great for cardio)
  • Lady Ga Ga (I always feel like I’m ready to choreograph a routine when I hear her music…lol)
  • Usher (his new album has many upbeat songs)
  • Janet Jackson (her #1 album is a good source of fabo songs)
  • Micheal Jackson…..nuff said
  • Ciara – “Work”, “1 2 Step”
  • Any and all Chicago style/ house music
  • Lil Wayne (only a couple of his hits…mostly mix tape….cause I can only do so much of him)
  • Panic at the Disco
  • Drake (my NEW boo)
  • One Republic
  • Adam Lambert – “What do You Want from Me”
  • Beyonce (I despise her…but “Get Me Bodied” and “Single Ladies” are both GREAT running songs)
  • Kirk Franklin
  • Tye Tribbett – any album really…..
  • Brittany Spears (her number one album has ALL the VINTAGE Brit songs…lol)
  • The Script
  • Santagold
  • Taylor Swift (this little girl is adorable)
  • Jay Z – “On to the Next One”….totally be feeling myself when listening to this one.
  • Gap Band (cause I’m ol skool)
  • Earth, Wind and Fire…..MY FAVORITE GROUP OF ALL TIMES….stays in rotation
  • The Noisettes
  • Pit bull
  • Dj Khalid (some of his songs….he is hit or miss)

Well that is all I can think of now.  My playlist for workouts are constantly changing, so this is not the say all, be all of the list.  So what you all think….a bit much?  Do you all suggest any songs SC family?  What say ye? Lol.

CURLS Campaign – “Educate” (step 2)

Educate

You can’t change what you don’t understand…Knowledge is power – Sharing the wealth!

Through reaching out to 3 core groups, CURLSCustomers, CURLSStylists, and CURLSSalon Owners, The 4 Step Sustainable CURLS™ Campaign educates these influencers on how small changes can make a big difference for the environment.  For example, there are many ways to avoid “product dumping” of used bottles. Regardless of whether they are labeled as recyclable, any time you throw out a bottle you’re causing detrimental effects on the environment.  CURLSwill also show how technology can reduce your carbon footprint!

Through creative promotional efforts like “plantable postcards” organic paper cards that are stamped with our message and  embedded with wildflower seeds that you can use to plant your very own tree, organic “CURLS Environista” T-Shirts, and branded recyclable pens, CURLShopes to spread the word in a dynamic and interactive way with all parts of the industry.

To educate salon owners, CURLSis partnering up with “Matter of Trust,” an organization of stylists who collect hair scraps that are then recycled and put to good use by being made into mats specially made to soak up industrial oil spills.  Click Here

Did you know….

  • Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions by significantly saving the amount of energy needed to manufacture the products that we buy, build and use
  • Recycled materials account for 40% of the world’s raw materials and is critical to our future sustainability
  • While plastics decompose, they can release potentially harmful substances into the surrounding ground water and soil, affecting future generations
  • Letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as much energy as letting a 60-watt light bulb run for 14 hours
  • Every year, an estimated 706 million gallons of oil enter our planet’s oceans: By far the greatest source of spilled oil is households.  Used Motor Oil – accounts for 363 million gallons in our oceans! 50% of Americans change their own motor oil, but only 1/3 of that oil is collected and recycled.  2/3 are dumped down drains or spilled on driveways and onto streets. One typical 5 quart oil change improperly dumped can contaminate millions of gallons of freshwater.

CURLS Environista team is trying to raise $2000.00 for the charity New York Cares.  For every dollar donated, $6.00 in services is provided.  Here is the link to donate.  Anyone who makes a donation will receive a promo code for a CURLS product discount!
