Natural Hair Update – September 2011

Hey SC Family!  Yes I’ve been gone for a minute, and I do apologize.  Forgive me…..:)  Lots going on in the orAKAle’s world and I can’t wait to share them with you.  Thanks for your patience.  Just wanted to give you guys a quick update on my hair.  Its been growing at rapid speeds and I’m so excited!

Below is a current pictures of me with stretched hair. I shampoo’d, hot oil treated, blew out (using my denman) THEN double stranded twisted the hair.  I wore the twist for about 2 weeks before taking them down.  Below are the results!  I used my hair cream to refresh an twists that were trying to get free (lol) and my flaxseed pomade daily to add shine and to do any slick ups or backs.  Take a look and tell me what you think!

My regimen includes a homemade pomade and hair cream with Shea butter and flaxseeds as two of my staple products. To learn about the benefits of flaxseed for the hair, click here I actually make my own oil/gel from the seeds to use on my hair.  As for my hair cream, I also use this concoction over the entire body (great for when the cold months come). It feels wonderful and I’m loving ever second of naturality.  This November I will be celebrating my 4 year Napaversary and I’m so excited. Maybe I will do something exciting for the SC readers…..guess you’ll have to wait and see.

Product Review: Carol’s Daughter “Healthy Hair Butter”

Shout out to ms KeysKorner for giving me some off this product. I’ve been meaning to order, but never got around to it; but low and behold my girl had a 4 oz tub of CD’s Healthy Hair Butter this in her PJ closet!  Lol.  My review is below…

Ingredients list: Water (Aqua), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Beeswax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), Ascorbic Acid, Xantham Gum, Potassium Sorbate

This conditioning hair dress is made for all hair types.  It is rich in all the good stuff and is creamy (not greasy).  The site references that it helps to minimize breakage, controls frizz and will load your hair with all the necessary nutrients needed to be healthy.  As always, we love the fact that this heavenly hair cream is free of mineral oils and an artificial anything!  This product can be used for protective styling, wash n go’s and also a light sealer for you coils.

Silky Coils Thoughts….

Overall I like the product…especially for it has my fav Shea Butter.  While it states on the site that its non greasy….I would slightly disagree. If used sparingly, depending on your hair type, you may see some residue on your sheets, hair accessories and hopefully not the clothing.  As you all may know, I have a heavy hand so the first time I used was entirely to much. Lol. BUT one thing I can say that if you use this product, you may not need a pomade, etc in the morning for styling….well at least ya girl didn’t 🙂

For my type 4 haired beauties, this is definitely  a hot pick for keeping your kinks and coils moisturized and sealed. For my type 3 haired lovelies, I think it will depend on the grade of your hair. I’ve had some who said that it was to thick and sat literally on top of the hair, and others who swear by it…but only YOU know your hair and what it likes. Either way, I think its definitely a good product to have in the stash.  I’m not sure if I would add this to my summer time product list, but to each its own!

Tips for Growing Healthy Hair

I love when I get this question; for their is never ONE true answer to it.  Having healthy hair (be it natural or chemically processed) takes time, patience and a little TLC.  Longevity should be a factor when trying to reset your hair health; along with a willingness to learn new things.  On my journey to a more healthier Silky Coils, I soaked up as much information on wellness in general while pursuing natural healthy hair bliss.

I know the list is long, but I’ve been waiting to post this after doing more research, trial and error and speaking to YOU the SC Family on what you wanted to know. So I present to you my tips for growing healthy hair:

Hydration – If you’ve done ANY research on being overall healthy, you will find that keeping your body hydrated is key. The same would go for having healthy hair. Water makes up a fourth of the weight of a strand of hair, so when you drink the proper amount for YOUR body type, naturally your hair will respond by being supple, and shiny!  I always suggest a minimum of 8 servings (8 fl ounces) a day.

Vitamin and Supplements – I plan to post a separate entry regarding these, but I did want to include them on this list.  Yes there are many hair supplements you can take (i.e. Biotin) to help stimulate growth and prepare your hair; BUT simply taking a daily multivitamin can also do the trick.  Our bodies needs nutrients to function properly on a daily basis…this also includes proper growth of your hair.  Depending on your health needs, you can find a suitable multivitamin that will not only assist in daily functions but also hair growth and repair.  Personally, I take Centrum Ultra Women’s.  If you do not take a multivitamin……START IMMEDIATELY!!! It may save your life

Control Stress Levels – CRAZY I know, but interesting enough your stress levels effect not only your overall health, but also your hair.  When we get stressed our physiological levels rise and can either stop hair growth or cause hair loss?  During this time, your hair follicles go into a resting phase cause a reduction in growth and sometimes loss.  Some of us control it better than others; but if your like me…my stress can get pretty out of control during high priority times of the year.  So ways to combat stress can be found here.

Food Intake – Long time SC family has heard me speak about this before – you have to be cognizant on what your putting inside your body.  Everything that goes in, has to come out some how; and eating nutrition foods will aid in repairing (or rebooting) the hair follicle AND stimulate growth.  Some recommended nutrients found in our food, to grow healthy hair include (but are not limited to): Proteins, Iron, B Vitamins, Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamin E and Sulfur.  It is also suggested to stay away from foods that are sugary, loaded with fat, caffeine based and carbonated for they can cause a lot of damage to our hair!

Styling/Products – First, if you haven’t’ read my post on Determining Your Hair Type you may want to first take a look before you go on. You can’t stimulate growth or achieve health with your coils if you have no clue what type of hair you have.  From there, you can find many resources on what products work best for YOUR hair.  I’m a type 4 diva, so I like products that are loaded with ingredients like Shea Butter, Aloe, Rosemary oil, etc; for I know for me, these ingredients protect my hair through any weather AND maximize growth.  As for styling, some general rules is to always keep it moisturized, utilizing protective styling and retain hair, add hair utensils that will aid in your daily matriculation of the hair not damage it; and finally to make an effort to wrap your hair at night OR use a satin pillow case to not cause damage and breakage as you sleep (I can’t stress this enough).

License Stylists are our Friends– Family, you all would be surprised how many people I run into who believe that with the proper ingridients, tools and the web they can be their own stylist…..NEGATIVE. While I pride myself on being able to better manage my hair in the comfort of my home…for FREE, I also see the importance of having a professional examine my hair.  Even though I’ve recently embarked on trimming my own ends (that’s a whole other post for another day…lol), I also make sure to see my stylist every few months to get my “art work” checked and correct if needed.

Do your research – How you think I created this list….lol.  Seriously, while reading blogs are nice and convenient, it is critical that you do your own research regarding what will work for you. I can name off at least 20 blogs/articles I found and was reading, but it wasn’t until I did my OWN trial and error after researching what I was embarking on.  There are many books, websites and stylist out there who are willing to assist.  If you haven’t done so already, take a few minutes to learn your hair type and what type of product ingredients and styling tools work for YOU.

Dr. Brown’s Rendition of a “Curly Fro”

Dr. Brown is back to share results of her rendition of a curly fro using Silky Elements (To see Dr. Brown’s original product review click here).  Again, a great way to save money and look fabulous at the same time.  I am a firm believer you do not have to spend oodles of money on all these natural hair care sites/products (which are great by the way…and fund to try); when you have quality right in your backyard.  Again, to each his own.

Products used: Silk Elements Shampoo and Conditioner and Organics olive oil with Shea Butter moisturizing lotion (all can be found at any Sally Beauty Supply or your local hair )

I washed and conditioned hair with Silk Elements Shampoo and Conditioner (only a quarter size was used…because a little goes a long way). Them while sopping wet I parted hair into four sections detangled and added Organics Olive Oil with Shea Butter Moisturizing Lotion.

Then I parted each section one at a time into six sections.  My curls popped instantly and was still soft and shiny with body.  Each section was then twisted (double strand) and rolled on perm rods.  After all was rolled I tied my hair in a satin scarf and went to sleep.

Next day I took my scarf off and blow dried any damp sections. Then I took rollers out and presto!

The organic olive oil with shea butter moisturizing lotion was applied before twisting to add more moisture to my wet hair (during the drying process on the perm rods).  I used a nickel size amount of this lotion on each section and finger combed it through to fully saturate each strand. This lotion is not heavy or greasy either which is great.  I really think that is the secret!

Absolutely fabulous Dr. Brown!  Family what do you think about the results?  I may have to pick me some of this up and try it on my coils……lol

Last Braid Out for Summer 2010

As some of you may know, I have decided to go see my natural hair stylist in the STL, and get a glamorous sew in for the summer.  This is not uncommon for me (to get a protective style for the summer months), but usually I am getting braids versus this options (for those who may be new to SC and black hair terms, a “sew in” is usually in reference to a weave or extensions in ones hair).

To send off my lovely coils with a BANG before getting sewed up, I decided to do one last braid out…for old time sake. I know your probably thinking “why is she talking like she is never going to see her natural hair again”….BECAUSE it will be gone for about 3 months and I will miss my coils……(don’t judge me). Lol.  Below are the results…..enjoy….

Decided that since I am going to be “weaved up” for a few months, it would be good to do a ACV rinse and a hot oil treatment to add some protect the hair (while braided and covered).  I let the oil sit on the hair for about 30 minutes….(entirely to long in my opinion..but I got lost in a movie..lol) and then proceeded to detangling with my new found love the Denman Brush and began braiding the hair.  Hair tools needed: rubber duckbill clips (2), hair clamps and a wide tooth comb (as well as my denman)….oh and a towel 🙂

I used my current go to product, AfroVeda’s She Alma Hair Butter(I promise a product review is coming soon); applying the cream from root to end.  Below are those results and the current length of my hair:

For those who REALLY follow SC, you will notice first the length of my braids and how quickly my hair is growing. Also, you will see NO FUZZY ENDS!  I made a point to concentrate on the ends of the braids with my hair butter, but also with my braiding technique. No hair went unturned this time.  Lol.   As usually I sealed with shea butter and I made the braids medium sized, versus the usual smaller sized ones (since I was taking them down in the morning).

I literally did this while watching some RedBox movies.  It took longer than it should, but since I was watching a movie…I didn’t care.  For bed time, I pushed the front two braids off to the side and put on my satin cap. In the morning, I got up and unbraided the hair with dry hands……went back to getting dressed for work and then used my AfroVeda Totally Twisted Hair Cream to separate and style.  The verdict is in all:

For the Love of Shea Butter!!!

Today I wanted to weigh in on the ever so popular (and somewhat main streamed) Shea butter.  For those who chat with me on and off the blog, shea butter is my staple product for my hair and body (and has been since transitioning to a more natural life).   For those who may be new to this ingredient/product, let’s start with a basic description of what it is and then work our way up to how you can use.

WHAT IS IT ANYWAY……

Shea butter is a light gray or beige colored seed oil that is extracted from the seed found inside the nuts of Shea tree. It is also referred to as the Karite tree. This unique tree can be found in 19 countries found only in the continent of Africa.

These trees only grow in the wild and can take up to 50 years to mature..but can live up to 300 years (crazy right)! Destruction of the shea tree tree is said to be prohibited because this little nut can provide a valuable source of food, medicine, and income for the population. Shea butter is sometimes referred to as “women’s gold” in Africa, because so many women are employed in the production of Shea butter.

HOW CAN I USE IT….

Neat thing about this supplement is that it can be used for just about EVERYTHING. Shea butter can be used as to help heal burns, scares and also reduce wrinkles. How… it moisturizes the skin, promoting cell renewal, and increasing circulation. One of its common use is for the hair and skin care. Since shea has proven to be an effective moisturizer (due to the fatty acids that are needed to retain skin moister and elasticity), commercially, it been added to many cosmetic products (shampoo, lotion, oils, facial treatments, etc) we use today!

It can and will protect the hair and skin (if used properly). As for the hair, Shea butter can serve as a natural moisturizer for the hair follicles, but also can be used to repair damaged hair. Since it is natural, you don’t necessarily have to add a bunch of “other” ingredients to this supplement to get the desired out come. Some people prefer to use it solely by itself, while others use it as an ingredient to a SUPER mixture for their hair and body regimen. I say why not do both! You can repair and naturally moisturize yourself from head to toe!

HOW IS THE orAKAle USING IT…….

Well I am glad that you asked!! Currently, I am using unrefined Shea butter in my scalp oil, daily body butter mix which I ABSOLUTELY LOVE, and in my weekly leave in conditioner.  Since I have type 4 A/B (and sometimes I see some C…but I digress) hair, this supplement is perfect for the perfect moister point I seek, plus my coils are defined and LOVE IT. Not only am I protecting my silky coils, but also keeping it properly moisturized AND stimulating hair growth (repair if needed). I am overly conscious about my hair/skin and its moister…..I’m always looking to see if its to dry, overly oily, etc. Well with adding Shea butter to my daily hair and body regimen and making sure its a staple in my alternative shampoo’s and conditioners, I know that I am treating my coils good (and in return..they will do the same).

My goal is to update you all on my hair growth and regimen regularly…now what does “regularly” means, who knows; but know that I am trying to do better all!  If you use this product and have had some great results, weigh in on the subject….
